A Georgia man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for providing the firearm used by his son in a school shooting that claimed the lives of two students and two teachers. His son, Colt Gray, was previously sentenced to life in prison for the September 4, 2024, shooting at Appalachi High School. Prosecutors had sought an 80-year sentence for the father, Colin Gray, while the defense requested 10 years in prison followed by 10 years of probation. The judge found Colin Gray culpable due to his “reckless disregard” contributing to his son’s actions. Gray gifted his son a semi-automatic rifle with ammunition during the Christmas holiday. The victims were identified as students Mason Shermerhorn and Christian Angulo, and teachers Richard Aspinwall and Christina Irimi; another teacher and eight students were injured. This case reflects a growing trend in the U.S. of holding parents accountable for their children’s crimes involving firearms.
