New data from CBS in the Netherlands reveals that approximately 340 people daily require emergency room treatment due to falls, with 21 resulting in fatalities. While fall prevention courses are available nationwide for those 65 and older, participation remains lower than ideal. These courses focus on strengthening muscles, improving balance, and enhancing coordination, targeting individuals who feel unsteady, fear falling, or have previously experienced a fall. Although most serious fall-related injuries occur in those 80+, cases are increasing among individuals aged 65-74. Initiatives like annual “fall prevention weeks” aim to encourage greater participation, with nearly 15,000 seniors completing courses through their municipalities in 2024. Despite a growing number of municipalities offering fall risk assessments and increasing the number of certified trainers, a negative perception of fall prevention – associating it with old age and decline – deters many from seeking training, according to GGD Amsterdam.
