Authorities in Ulaanbaatar are warning citizens against spreading false information regarding bear sightings. Over the recent holiday weekend, three bear-related reports were received, two of which were confirmed as fabricated using artificial intelligence to create false images. These instances of misinformation led to legal penalties – 300,000 MNT for individuals and 3,000,000 MNT for legal entities – under the Law of Violations. One other report was investigated with surveillance footage suggesting a possible bear presence, prompting further investigation. Officials emphasize that genuine bear encounters pose a real threat to public safety and property. Spreading false reports diverts resources and potentially delays responses to actual emergencies, hindering the ability to assist those in genuine danger, as emergency responders may be occupied with false alarms.
