Medical assistance for American inmate Christa Pike was delayed following a failed execution due to confusion between the emergency dispatch center and Riverbend-gevangenis staff. The dispatch center questioned the authenticity of the emergency call from the correctional facility personnel, as the caller was unable to provide a required verification code. Initially, at 20:40, the call reported Pike, 50, was unconscious and breathing irregularly after a lethal injection was administered. A dispatch operator stated at 21:03 that “no medical assistance is needed at Riverbend-gevangenis.” It wasn’t until 21:11, thirty minutes after the initial call, that Riverbend-gevangenis personnel confirmed a genuine emergency and the necessity of medical intervention. Simultaneously, one of Pike’s attorneys, Kelly Gleason, made a separate emergency call, stating Pike was still alive and in urgent need of life-saving care. The Tennessee Department of Justice is investigating the cause of the failed execution and has temporarily halted all further executions pending the results.
