A Belgian judge has issued a European arrest warrant for Dimitris Avramopoulos, a former Greek EU Commissioner, in connection with the “Qatargate” corruption scandal. The investigation centers on allegations that Qatar and Morocco attempted to influence EU decisions by bribing European politicians in Brussels. Avramopoulos denies any wrongdoing, stating he had no involvement in any improper activities and will waive parliamentary immunity to cooperate with investigations. The Qatargate scandal, one of the largest in European history, involves accusations of corruption, money laundering, and criminal association against multiple European Parliament members, including former Vice-President Eva Kaili. Authorities have seized over €1.5 million in cash during raids, including substantial sums found in a Brussels hotel room and a parliamentarian’s apartment. The Greek government confirmed the arrest warrant, while both Qatar and Morocco maintain their innocence. Avramopoulos currently serves as a Greek Member of Parliament.
