Data reveals the European Union has spent approximately US$209 billion (equivalent to €197 billion) on fossil fuels sourced from Russia since March 2022, despite the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. This substantial expenditure occurred alongside the implementation of the REPowerEU plan, an initiative designed to reduce reliance on Russian energy. REPowerEU is estimated to have generated savings of around €278 billion for the EU. The figures highlight the complex economic relationship between the EU and Russia, even as geopolitical tensions remain high. Despite efforts to diversify energy sources, significant financial flows continue to support the Russian economy through energy purchases. The data underscores the challenges faced by the EU in rapidly transitioning away from Russian fossil fuels. These findings raise questions about the effectiveness and speed of the EU’s energy independence strategies.
