The European Union has imposed sanctions on a Russian company developing a Starlink rival, aimed at disrupting Russia’s drone capabilities in Ukraine. However, crucially, the EU has not sanctioned the company manufacturing essential components for this system, a gap experts deem significant. This omission allows Russia to potentially circumvent the sanctions and continue improving its drone technology. Ukraine currently utilizes electronic warfare tactics to disrupt Russian drone navigation, forcing them off course. A satellite relay system, like the one Russia is developing, would safeguard drones against such jamming, enabling direct and accurate strikes. The lack of comprehensive sanctions highlights a potential weakness in the EU’s strategy to limit Russia’s technological advancement in the ongoing conflict and raises questions about enforcement effectiveness.
