Renewed fighting in the northern region of Ethiopia has sparked fears of a new humanitarian crisis and reports of forced recruitment by rebel groups. A new alliance of armed groups in Tigray is allegedly forcibly recruiting men and boys, some as young as 15, to bolster their ranks. This conflict reignited on September 23rd between the Ethiopian federal government and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), the ruling power in the Tigray region. The current clashes represent a devastating setback, effectively dismantling the fragile peace agreement brokered in Pretoria, South Africa in November 2022. Civilians are attempting to flee as the recruitment drives intensify, with men and boys reportedly being rounded up from the streets. The situation raises serious concerns about the safety and wellbeing of vulnerable populations in Tigray. Further developments are expected as the conflict continues to unfold.
