Estonia’s Defence Minister Hanno Pevkur has resigned following a scandal involving a €70 million contract with an Indian company, Datasel SRL, for artillery shells intended for Ukraine. The company, with no prior experience in ammunition production, received EU funding in August 2024 to deliver munitions by November of the same year. Deliveries were repeatedly delayed, and when inspected in 2025, the shells were found to be faulty, preventing their shipment to the Ukrainian front line. Pevkur stated he takes political responsibility for the failure, despite claiming he did not personally review the contracts, asserting that a leader must demonstrate courage and accountability. The scandal is particularly embarrassing for Estonia, a nation increasing military spending due to its potential role as a key NATO defence line against Russia. Pevkur’s resignation leaves the Prime Minister to seek a replacement, while investigations into the procurement process are expected to follow.
