Estonian banks are implementing an upgraded version of the Smart-ID digital identification system, dubbed Smart-ID+, to strengthen defenses against increasingly sophisticated online scams. The update introduces additional verification steps during authentication, aiming to disrupt common fraud techniques. While adding slight complexity for users, the changes are intended to provide a significant increase in security. Banks report a rise in scam attempts targeting online banking customers, prompting the need for enhanced protection. Smart-ID is widely used in Estonia for accessing a range of digital services, including banking, e-government, and private sector platforms. The upgrade is being rolled out progressively across Estonian banking institutions. Authorities hope the new system will reduce financial losses and bolster trust in digital services.
