The Estonian Artists' Association (EKL) is auctioning artwork to recoup funds after being defrauded of nearly €700,000 in May. The auction will include pieces from the association’s collection as well as recently donated works. EKL board member Jaanus Samma stated that sacrificing the art is preferable to losing the association’s studio spaces. This decision highlights the significant financial impact of the fraud on the organization. The auction represents a necessary step to stabilize the EKL following the criminal act. The association hopes the sale will alleviate some of the financial burden and allow them to continue supporting Estonian artists.
