After 63 years of operation, the Delft student union (VSSD) is shutting down due to a lack of new board members. Former board member Eise de Boer attributed this decline to increased academic pressure and a waning interest in volunteer work among students. As the largest local student union in the Netherlands with 3,000 members, the VSSD was renowned for its high-profile and creative protests. Notable stunts included a mock armored car robbery in 1994 and a 2012 campaign that jokingly put TU Delft up for sale to protest the removal of basic grants. The organization also served as a leadership platform for figures such as former PvdA politician Diederik Samsom. More recently, the union maintained its provocative streak by awarding a "dishonorable" prize to a faculty dean over the closure of a student bar. Despite its rich history of activism, the union can no longer sustain its leadership.
