A study by the Swedish publication Teknikens Värld analyzed the total cost per kilometer of over 70 electric vehicle models. The research revealed substantial differences in cost, with a potential gap of over €26,000 between the most and least expensive models to operate. While electricity is a relatively inexpensive energy source, the overall economic impact of EV ownership requires considering factors beyond fuel costs. The analysis factored in purchase price, depreciation, capital costs, maintenance, vehicle tax, insurance, and energy consumption. Notably, depreciation proved to be a significant expense, with one model losing over €1,500 in value each month. The study highlights the importance of a comprehensive assessment when evaluating the true cost of electric vehicle ownership.
