An Egyptian court has sentenced a well-known television presenter, Sara Khalifa, and 11 others to death for drug-related offenses, according to state media reports on Saturday. Khalifa, 39, hosted the popular program “Mission Impossible,” which covered social security and crime-related issues. The Cairo court convicted the group of acquiring materials used in drug manufacturing for profit, possessing unauthorized firearms and ammunition, and forming a criminal organization. Before issuing the sentence, the court consulted with Egypt’s Grand Mufti, as required by Egyptian law for capital punishment cases. The defendants have the right to appeal the verdict. Khalifa also owns a company specializing in cosmetic surgery clinics, events, and organization of activities. Investigations led to the seizure of 750 kg of drugs and raw materials, two laboratories, and illegal weapons. Additionally, Khalifa and her associates received five-year prison sentences for separate charges of kidnapping and assault. Egypt employs the death penalty for crimes including deliberate murder, terrorism, certain sexual offenses, and drug trafficking; in 2025, 541 people received death sentences in Egypt, according to human rights organizations.
