A new study analyzing ancient mollusc shells indicates Earth had 372 days in a year approximately 70 million years ago, during the Cretaceous period. Each day during this era lasted 23 hours and 31 minutes, differing significantly from the modern 24-hour cycle. Researchers determined this by studying growth layers within the fossilized shell, revealing annual growth patterns. The research also provides insights into the Earth-Moon distance at the time and suggests warmer ocean temperatures existed. Evidence points to the prevalence of photosymbiosis, a relationship between organisms and photosynthetic partners. The exceptionally long life span of over nine years of the mollusc, thriving on a tropical seabed, further underscores the unique conditions of that period.
