The East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) is working to unify seed and plant variety regulations across East Africa. This initiative aims to increase agricultural output, strengthen food security, and facilitate the trade of quality seeds between member states. A public hearing was held regarding the East African Community Seed and Plant Varieties Bill, 2025, to discuss the proposed changes. David Ole Sankok, Chairperson of EALA’s Agriculture Committee, led the discussion, highlighting the importance of standardized regulations. The harmonized laws are expected to improve the quality and availability of planting materials. Ultimately, EALA hopes these reforms will contribute to a more resilient and productive agricultural sector throughout the region, bolstering food supplies and economic growth.
