The East African Community (EAC) is advancing a new Medical Products Bill, slated for 2024, designed to tackle the issue of counterfeit pharmaceuticals and address existing drug shortages. This legislation aims to strengthen the implementation of the EAC Customs Union and support the region’s industrialization goals. Dr. Abdullah Makame, Chairperson of the General-Purpose Committee, highlighted the EAC’s existing capacity for pharmaceutical production. The bill seeks to improve regulatory harmonization across member states, fostering a more secure and reliable supply of essential medicines. By curbing the influx of falsified drugs, the EAC hopes to protect public health and encourage investment in local manufacturing. Ultimately, the legislation is expected to fortify regional healthcare systems and promote economic growth within the community.
