A 39-year-old woman from Amstelveen, Netherlands has been diagnosed with West Nile virus, marking the fourth confirmed case in the country this year. Local health authorities (GGD) confirmed the infection occurred within the Amsterdam region. The woman developed meningitis as a result of the virus, a complication affecting roughly 1% of those infected. Tragically, two other Dutch citizens, a 78-year-old man from Utrecht and a woman in Drenthe, died earlier this year from the same virus. Transmitted by common house mosquitoes feeding on infected birds, West Nile virus typically causes no symptoms in approximately 80% of those infected. The National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) states the risk of contracting the virus in the Netherlands remains low, and will issue an updated report on infection numbers later this week.
