Oosterwold, a town in the Netherlands, is pioneering a unique approach to urban development by requiring all residents to dedicate at least 50% of their property to food cultivation. This innovative initiative fosters a balance between residential living and natural landscapes through low-density housing. Residents are actively involved in growing produce for their own consumption and for local commercial outlets, promoting self-sufficiency. A local food hub provides support and resources to assist residents in their agricultural endeavors. The core aim of this project is to bolster sustainability and preserve the agricultural heritage of the area. Oosterwold’s model presents a novel solution to integrate food production directly into residential communities.
