A nationwide strike in the Netherlands will halt most train, bus, tram, and metro services on the morning of June 24th, between 4:00 AM and 8:00 AM. The FNV union organized the action to protest government austerity measures targeting social security benefits, including unemployment and long-term disability provisions. While the plan to raise the state pension age has been dropped, the strike continues against cuts to existing welfare programs. The national railway company, NS, states that resuming full service after the strike will cause disruptions throughout the morning, and sufficient replacement buses are unavailable. International services like the Eurostar will continue to operate with reservations, and the airport shuttle will remain active. Other transport companies, like Arriva and Transdev, are assessing the impact and expect services to gradually return to normal later in the morning. Amsterdam and Rotterdam’s public transport will also experience delays.
