Several prominent Dutch newspapers, including NRC, Volkskrant, AD, and De Telegraaf, have been fined tens of thousands of euros by the Health and Youth Care Inspectorate (IGJ) for articles covering weight-loss medications Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro. The IGJ determined that some reporting constituted public advertising for prescription drugs, despite articles addressing both benefits and side effects. DPG Media received a €51,000 fine related to articles in Volkskrant and AD, one of which covered research published in Nature. Editors-in-chief are expressing concerns that these actions threaten press freedom and scientific journalism, arguing the reports were factual and neutral. They criticize the lack of clarity regarding acceptable reporting guidelines on these medications, leading to accusations of censorship. The IGJ maintains it considers freedom of expression but enforces laws prohibiting public advertising of prescription drugs, stating Ozempic is registered for diabetes treatment, not weight loss.
