A Dutch parliament member, Barbara Kathmann, is advocating for increased public awareness regarding digital inheritance – what happens to online accounts and digital assets after death. Currently, the vast majority of Dutch citizens haven’t considered this issue, leading to bureaucratic difficulties for grieving families. Kathmann proposes a national awareness campaign and the inclusion of “digital legacy” education in digital skills courses, particularly for seniors. Common issues include inaccessible farewell messages locked behind forgotten passwords and difficulties accessing cryptocurrency holdings. The Alliantie Digitaal Samenleven organization has launched a campaign, ‘Data na de Dood’ (Data After Death), offering guidance on planning for digital legacies. Experts suggest platforms should be required to offer users options for managing their data post-mortem, going beyond current voluntary practices. The goal is to alleviate emotional and practical burdens on bereaved individuals.
