Prolonged drought in the Netherlands is causing significant problems for houseboat owners, with many vessels now resting on the riverbed. This is leading to structural damage including cracks in walls and roofs, warped doors and windows, and issues with plumbing as wastewater is no longer draining properly. The Landelijke Waterwoon Organisatie (LWO) reports increasing numbers of damage claims, arriving earlier in the year than usual. The situation is particularly acute in areas like the Rosandepolder, where half of the usual number of houseboats are currently grounded. Recent dredging efforts in one area have provided temporary relief, but other areas remain critically low. Owners are facing not only costly repairs but also concerns regarding sanitation and the continuing lack of a long-term solution to the problem.
