A power outage at a Rijkswaterstaat traffic control center is causing widespread issues with highway matrix boards in the northeastern Netherlands. The outage prevents operators from controlling variable message signs, including the display of red crosses, speed limits, and the opening/closing of rush-hour lanes. Affected provinces include Groningen, Drenthe, Friesland, and parts of Overijssel and Gelderland. Roadwork lane closures, such as those on the A50 near Heteren, cannot be lifted, and the Salland-Twentetunnel has been proactively closed as a safety precaution. Rijkswaterstaat is working to resolve the problem, but motorists are urged to exercise extreme caution. The inability to manage traffic flow effectively poses a significant safety risk.
