The increase in female council members (wethouders) in Dutch municipalities has stalled this year, reaching approximately 29% nationally – the same as four years ago. While previous elections saw consistent gains in female representation, this trend has now plateaued. Regional disparities are significant, with Utrecht province leading at 33% female wethouders, and Zeeland lagging behind at only 16%. The all-male composition of some councils, like Heerlen’s initial proposal, sparked protest and led one candidate to step aside to allow for female representation. Despite a long-term increase from 19% to 29% over the last sixteen years, over eighty municipalities now have no female wethouders. However, some municipalities, like Renkum, demonstrate the opposite – a fully female council.
