The Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) is warning farmers about the risk of heat stress in livestock, including cows, pigs, sheep, and horses, during the upcoming heatwave. The NVWA emphasizes the importance of providing adequate shelter and water for animals and will be enforcing these regulations. For the first time, drones will be deployed this summer to identify at-risk pasture areas lacking shade. Farmers found to be non-compliant with welfare standards may face fines. Heat stress manifests in animals through symptoms like excessive drooling, trembling, and lethargy, and can be fatal, particularly for animals like pigs who cannot sweat. While some farmers are well-prepared, previous inspections revealed animals suffering from insufficient shade and water access.
