Japanese authorities report that alcohol impairment was a factor in 43 out of 386 accidents involving electric kick scooters and similar small motorized two-wheel vehicles. This equates to approximately 11% of all reported incidents. The data, released recently, highlights growing safety concerns surrounding the increasing popularity of e-scooters in the country. These vehicles, formally designated as “specified small motorized two-wheel vehicles,” are subject to traffic regulations, but enforcement regarding impaired operation remains a challenge. Authorities are now considering increased public awareness campaigns and stricter penalties for those operating e-scooters under the influence. The findings underscore the need for responsible usage and adherence to traffic laws as e-scooter adoption continues to rise in Japan. Further analysis is planned to identify contributing factors and develop preventative measures.
