The President of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) announced an upcoming visit to Ituri province, the epicenter of the current Ebola outbreak declared on May 15th. This marks the DRC’s 17th Ebola epidemic, with over 1,000 confirmed cases and 267 deaths reported as of the latest official count, representing a 25.5% fatality rate. The outbreak is concentrated in three eastern provinces of the DRC, with cases also appearing in neighboring Uganda, where two deaths have been recorded. The current outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo virus, for which there is no existing vaccine or treatment, unlike previous strains. The President pledged his full commitment to resolving the health crisis, acknowledging challenges in implementing a rapid response due to limited resources and ongoing violence from armed groups in the Ituri region. Health officials are focusing on isolating patients and tracing contacts, but hospitals still lack essential equipment over a month after the outbreak’s declaration.
