A senior member of the Union for Democracy and Social Progress (UDPS) party in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Marie-Celestin Karondwa, was beaten to death on Sunday. Karondwa, the acting president of the UDPS federal executive committee in Butembo, was attacked shortly after participating in a radio program. During the program, he discussed measures to prevent the spread of the ongoing Ebola outbreak which has made Butembo a new hotspot. The UDPS federation in Butembo released a statement confirming the attack and noting its connection to his public health advocacy. The incident highlights the dangers faced by those working to combat the Ebola virus in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Authorities have not yet commented on the attack or announced any arrests. The motive is currently unknown, but the timing suggests a connection to his recent radio appearance, raising concerns about possible opposition to the preventative measures he discussed.
