In eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, Joseph Kabila has taken leadership of a new political-military movement called the Front for the Refoundation of the Nation (FRN). The announcement was made late Monday, October 12, 2026, in Goma. This new platform now encompasses both the Alliance Fleuve Congo (AFC) and the March 23 Movement (M23). The former Congolese president, openly critical of Félix Tshisekedi, is heading the movement with several vice presidents. These include Corneille Nangaa, Bertrand Bisimwa, and Sultani Makenga, who were previously leading figures within AFC-M23. This development signals a potential escalation of political tensions within the DRC. The FRN’s formation represents a significant consolidation of opposition forces.
