The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo is “far from being under control,” according to World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. Despite recent progress, new cases continue to emerge, and the risk of the virus spreading remains high. The outbreak, confirmed in late April, is occurring in a challenging environment with ongoing conflict and displacement. This complicates efforts to track contacts and provide treatment. The WHO is working with the DRC government and partners to scale up response efforts, including vaccination campaigns and improved surveillance. Ghebreyesus emphasized the need for sustained funding and access to affected areas to contain the outbreak effectively and prevent further loss of life. He also stressed the importance of community engagement in controlling the spread of the virus.
