Qian van Binsbergen’s documentary series, “The Takeaway Chinese: Delivered,” has received the Silver Nipkow Disc, a prominent Dutch television award. The series, a follow-up to 2023’s “The Takeaway Chinese,” investigates the consequences of adoption, particularly focusing on fraud and potential child trafficking. The jury praised the documentary for its critical examination of the Dutch government’s historical oversight regarding adoption practices and its willingness to confront difficult subjects like sexual abuse within adoptive families. The series highlights the vulnerability of adopted children to abuse, often perpetrated by individuals close to them. Van Binsbergen also received a Tegel award last month for her journalistic work on the series. The filmmaker’s personal journey to China in search of her biological family is a central element of the documentary, revealing her complex emotions about her upbringing. Despite the recognition, Van Binsbergen expressed frustration that legal changes to improve access to adoption records for adoptees remain limited.
