A Dutch Member of Parliament is advocating for a government-led public awareness campaign regarding digital legacies. The initiative aims to educate citizens about managing their online accounts and digital assets in the event of their death. Currently, accessing a deceased person’s online data—including email, social media, and financial accounts—can be extremely difficult for relatives. The MP argues that without proper planning, valuable memories and essential information can be lost or become inaccessible. The proposed campaign would provide guidance on creating a digital will or designating a digital executor. Similar schemes exist in other countries, and the MP believes the Netherlands should follow suit to address growing concerns about data security and inheritance in the digital age. The goal is to simplify the process for bereaved families and protect individuals’ digital rights.
