Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, is rapidly becoming uninhabitable due to a confluence of factors including excessive population density and unplanned urbanization. Severe traffic congestion, chronic waterlogging, and escalating environmental pollution are further exacerbating the city’s decline. The city consistently ranks low on global livability indexes, reflecting these deteriorating conditions. According to the Economist Intelligence Unit’s (EIU) ‘Global Livability Index 2026’, Dhaka scored a mere 42 out of 100. This indicates a critical need for improved urban management and planning to address these challenges and enhance the quality of life for its residents. The report highlights a concerning trend for the future of the megacity.
