Five deer unexpectedly died last week in a deer park in Maasland, Zuid-Holland. Initially, the cause of death was unknown, but autopsies revealed large quantities of uncooked rice in their stomachs. Volunteers believe someone threw the rice into their feed trough last weekend. Following this, the animals became ill. At first, park staff suspected a virus infection. However, it turns out the deer consumed uncooked rice which expanded in their stomachs, ultimately causing their death. The deer park describes the situation as "very sad" and states it represents "a great loss" for the volunteers who care for the animals.
