Researchers from the University of Costa Rica and Incopesca have identified a previously unknown species of ghost shark, also known as a chimaera, inhabiting the deep Pacific waters off the Costa Rican coast. The discovery occurred at a depth exceeding 390 meters. This new species adds to the limited knowledge surrounding these elusive cartilaginous fish, which are rarely observed due to their deep-sea habitat. Chimaeras are not true sharks, but are related, and possess unique characteristics like a soft, cartilaginous skeleton and glowing scales. The finding highlights the biodiversity of Costa Rica’s marine ecosystems and the importance of continued deep-sea exploration. Further research is planned to study the new species’ behavior, diet, and population size.
