The sterlet, a crucial indicator species for the health of the Danube River basin, faces extinction due to overfishing and habitat degradation. Recognizing the species’ decline, Slovenia has joined Austria and Hungary in a collaborative initiative to establish fish hatcheries. These hatcheries will focus on breeding and releasing sterlet back into the Danube, bolstering dwindling wild populations. The joint effort aims to reverse the negative trend and secure the long-term survival of the sterlet. Conservationists view the trilateral cooperation as a vital step in preserving biodiversity within the Danube ecosystem. The sterlet’s status as an indicator species means its recovery could signal improvements in overall river health.
