A severe drought across Europe this year is raising concerns about water levels in major rivers, including the Danube. Bioclimatologist Miroslav Trnka, director of the CzechGlobe research institute, warns that even large, typically water-rich rivers are vulnerable to extended dry periods. This year’s drought significantly impacted the Danube basin, following similar issues observed in other crucial waterways. The Rhine experienced problems in 2022, while the Elbe River suffered last year. The Po River basin has faced recurring water shortages, highlighting a growing trend. These events demonstrate the increasing fragility of European river systems due to climate change and the urgent need for water management strategies. The situation underscores that historically reliable water sources are no longer guaranteed.
