Motorcycle taxis, known locally as “Thiak Thiak,” have become a crucial transportation method for students at the University Cheikh Anta Diop of Dakar (UCAD) in Senegal. Students utilize the taxis to bypass traffic congestion and efficiently commute to and from campus, particularly to areas like Ouakam. Many of the drivers are also students themselves, supplementing their income during breaks. A structured system has developed on campus, with designated waiting areas and a rotational order for picking up passengers. Drivers are considering implementing identification cards and vests to enhance passenger trust and security. University security personnel are familiar with regular drivers, though access to certain campus areas requires identification and a valid license. The “Thiak Thiak” have become an integrated part of university life, providing a practical solution to mobility challenges.
