The Czech Ministry of Health plans to consolidate all highly complex surgeries – roughly 4,000 procedures annually – at specialized centers by 2030. Currently, three-quarters of the approximately 17,000 such operations, primarily tumor removals, are already performed in these centers. Health Minister Adam Vojtěch emphasizes the critical link between surgical success and specialized experience. The Ministry’s goal is to improve outcomes by focusing complex procedures in facilities with the highest expertise. However, smaller hospitals have expressed concerns that this centralization could negatively impact patient access to care, particularly in rural areas. They also fear the plan might discourage doctors from working at smaller facilities. The move is intended to standardize and enhance the quality of complex surgical interventions nationwide.
