Czech engineering company AŽD has begun testing a new “train-tram,” called Lenka, on an experimental track between Dolní Bousov and Kopidlno. The vehicle, based on tram technology, is being touted as a potential solution for cost-effective regional rail transport. According to AŽD’s General Director Zdeněk Chrdle, the “train-tram” offers a less expensive operational model compared to conventional railways. The test run marks a significant step in assessing the viability of this hybrid technology. AŽD believes this innovation could represent the future of rail travel in regions where traditional train lines are financially unsustainable. The initial phase will focus on performance and safety evaluations during the trial operation. This project aims to revitalize regional connectivity with an affordable alternative.
