Greece has firmly backed the European Commissioner for Climate’s condemnation of Turkey’s attempt to exclude the Republic of Cyprus from preparatory processes for the COP31 climate conference. During a Council of EU Environment Ministers meeting, Greece stated that the inclusion of Cyprus is non-negotiable. The position adopted is that either all 27 EU member states are included in the preparations, or none at all. This stance underscores the EU’s commitment to the sovereignty and participation of Cyprus in international forums. The issue arose from Turkish efforts to prevent Cyprus’s involvement in the crucial planning stages for the upcoming climate summit. Greece’s support signals a unified front against attempts to isolate Cyprus within the EU framework and during international climate negotiations. This firm position aims to ensure a comprehensive and inclusive approach to addressing climate change within the region.
