Eighteen-year-old Darja, originally from occupied Crimea, has begun studying at a university in Kyiv, marking a new chapter in her life. Despite growing up under occupation and briefly relocating to Russia with her family, she independently learned the Ukrainian language, a passion not understood by her peers and teachers. Darja described to Suspilne Krym how she maintained her Ukrainian identity during the occupation. Her journey represents a quest for self-determination and freedom. She feels a sense of belonging and safety in Ukraine that she never experienced on the peninsula. This move signifies not just an educational opportunity, but a homecoming for Darja, allowing her to fully embrace her Ukrainian heritage.
