The Council of Europe’s Committee of Ministers has declined Turkey’s request to end international supervision of a case concerning the property rights of Greek Cypriots. The case, originating from a judgment by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) in the Cyprus v. Turkey dispute, centers on properties left behind by Greek Cypriots following the 1974 division of the island. Member states of the Council of Europe supported a proposal from Cyprus to continue monitoring the situation. This decision ensures continued international scrutiny of Turkey’s implementation of the ECHR ruling regarding compensation and restitution of lost properties. The ongoing case has been a long-standing point of contention between Turkey and Cyprus. The Committee’s action signals a lack of confidence in Turkey’s progress on resolving the property rights issue. This maintains pressure on Turkey to address the concerns raised by the ECHR.
