Costa Rica has successfully reintroduced thirteen white-lipped peccaries into Piedras Blancas National Park, marking their return after an 18-year absence. The reintroduction project is designed to restore ecological balance within the park’s ecosystems and benefit surrounding communities. Prior surveys confirmed the local extinction of the peccaries, underscoring the importance of intervention based on local knowledge. Beyond ecological benefits, the initiative aims to foster ecotourism and bolster environmental education programs in the region. Osa Conservation is a key partner, working alongside various stakeholders to ensure the long-term success of conservation efforts and ongoing community development. This reintroduction represents a significant step in preserving biodiversity in Costa Rica.
