Scientists at the CEITEC VUT institute in Brno have, for the first time, observed live coral growth in real-time using live microCT technology. The research focused on understanding how corals form their calcium carbonate skeletons, a process previously hidden from view. Findings detail coral growth patterns, regenerative capabilities, and responses to stressors and competing organisms. Researchers transported live coral specimens by train from Vienna to Brno to facilitate the study. This detailed understanding of coral biology could significantly aid conservation efforts for these vital ecosystem builders. The study provides crucial insights into coral resilience and adaptation in changing marine environments.
