A major construction company, ADS Groep, is considering leaving Goor, in the Twente region of the Netherlands, after its distinctive headquarters was designated a municipal monument. This potential relocation puts 235 jobs at risk and has sparked concern among local politicians, particularly within the VVD and D66 parties, who fear negative impacts on the local economy. The building, completed in 2000 and designed by Barend Scherpbier in collaboration with the company’s founders, features unique architectural elements inspired by Friedensreich Hundertwasser and Antoni Gaudí. ADS Groep had planned renovations to address issues like moisture damage and insufficient space, but these plans faced opposition from heritage organizations like Heemschut, who successfully campaigned for the building’s protected status. The monument designation restricts future alterations, leading ADS Groep to state that remaining in Goor is untenable. The company argues the restrictions hinder necessary improvements and expansion.
