Despite the 2016 Hague ruling affirming the Philippines’ rights in the West Philippine Sea, Chinese vessels continue to maintain a significant presence, impacting Filipino fishermen. Jerwin Cananea, a fisherman based in Subic, Zambales, deliberately avoids the disputed Scarborough Shoal due to the Chinese presence, instead fishing closer to shore. Many other Filipino fishermen traditionally rely on Scarborough Shoal as a key fishing ground, but face challenges accessing it. Even fishing within 60-70 nautical miles of Subic, Cananea experiences the effects of the ongoing situation. This continued crowding by Chinese ships limits access to traditional fishing areas and poses difficulties for the livelihoods of Filipino fishing communities. The situation highlights the ongoing challenges the Philippines faces in asserting its sovereign rights in the WPS.
