Chinese AI startup Moonshot has launched Kimi K3, a 2.8 trillion-parameter model touted as the world’s largest open-weight AI system. The model’s performance is reported to be approaching that of Anthropic’s Fable, a leading US AI model recently pulled from circulation by the US government. Kimi K3 boasts advanced reasoning capabilities, excels in coding and knowledge work, and features an expansive one million-token context window. Moonshot claims Kimi K3 outperforms models like OpenAI’s Opus and GPT, particularly in GPU kernel optimisation. Third-party evaluations place Kimi K3 competitively with top US models in areas like web interface building and complex task completion. The launch has already impacted the stock prices of competing Chinese AI firms, Zhipu and Minimax.
