China has inaugurated the world’s first 100kW floating solar farm constructed using bamboo as its primary building material. Dubbed Jilin-2, the platform utilizes composite bamboo tubes and pipes, representing an ecologically sound alternative to traditional offshore energy infrastructure. Located off the coast of Yantai in Shandong province, the farm serves as a demonstration project showcasing sustainable energy solutions. The electricity generated will power a pioneering project focused on the production of hydrogen, ammonia, and methanol. This innovative development, spearheaded by Yantai CIMC Raffles Ocean, highlights China’s commitment to renewable energy and the exploration of novel materials in solar technology. The bamboo construction offers a biodegradable and readily available resource, reducing the environmental impact compared to conventional materials. This launch positions China at the forefront of environmentally conscious energy innovation.
